Golden Ark Foundation

The goal of the Golden Ark Foundation is to protect species of wild animals and plants. In pursuit of this goal, the Foundation has established the Golden Ark Award. The prize rewards and funds individuals for their internationally outstanding species protection efforts.

The Golden Ark Awards will be awarded annually during the Golden Ark Conference at Burgers' Zoo in Arnhem, the Netherlands. A conservation master class and a sponsor market for species protection will accompany the annual conference.

Three winners Golden Ark Award 2008

Patricia Medici (Brazil), dr. Charudutt Mishra (India) and Michiel Hötte (The Netherlands) received the Golden Ark Awards 2008. Dr Vivek Menon (Member International Selection Committee) and Saba Douglas-Hamilton (the new Chair of the Intl. New Chair of the International Selection Comittee for the Golden Ark Award: Saba Douglas-Hamilton

At the occasion of the first Golden Ark Award event, Future for Nature, Saba Douglas-Hamilton became the new Chair of the International Selection Committee for the Golden Ark Award. As such she will lead the selection process for next years' Golden Ark Awards.

Saba was born in Kenya, educated as Social Anthropologist in the United Kingdom and active as professional conservationist for, amongst others, Save the Rhino Trust in Namibia and Save the Elephants (STE, Kenya). She is Trustee of STE and patron of the Wolf Trust. Nowadays Saba presents wildlife documentaries for amongst others BBC and Animal Planet, and is a successful wildlife film-maker (including Rhino Nights, Unknown Africa, Heart of a Lioness, Big Cat Diary, Elephants of Sambura, and Search for Polar Bears).

In Memoriam Dr. Nico van Strien

Dr. Nico van Strien died on 7 February 2008. Nico was Board Member of the Golden Ark Foundation until he became the first Chairman of the International Selection Committee of the Golden Ark Award.

With Nico we lost one of the most striking personalities in our nature conservationists network. Nico was a prominent protagonist of tropical nature in Asia. He spent a lifetime and was a champion of the protection of the Asian Rhinos. His knowledge about the ecology and behaviour of the Asian Rhino was unequalled.

We miss his passionate pursuit to save the Rhino. We need heroes like Nico. Through the Golden Ark Award initiative we hope to stimulate nature conservationists to work in his spirit.

Golden Ark Essay Competition: Would you like to win € 2000?

Then participate in the Golden Ark Essay competition and write an essay on Globalisation and Nature Conservation. These essays will be discussed at the Golden Ark Master Class, 13 March 2008.

The Golden Ark Foundation issues three Awards, of €2000 each for winning essays.

For this first round, the Essay Award is only open to PhD and Post-doc students of the Graduate School Production Ecology & Resource Conservation, of Wageningen University, the Netherlands. For more information, please refer to: Golden Ark Master Class.

10 nominees selected

The following ten candidates have been nominated for the Golden Ark Award 2008 (in alphabetical order);

Out of these ten nominees, the international Selection Committee will select three candidate winners for the Award and propose these to the Board of the Golden Ark Foundation for formal approval. The Golden Ark Award winners will receive their prize on March 14.

68 candidates from 40 countries

Up to 30 September, we received 68 Golden Ark Award applications from 40 different countries. The Board of the Golden Ark Foundation and the acting chairman of the international Selection Committee will announce the 10 nominations for the 2008 Award before the end of October 2007.

A final call for candidates for the Golden Ark Award will be distributed this week. Deadline for applications is 30 September.

Mrs. Yolanda Kakabadse Member Selection Committe

This month, Mrs Yolanda Kakabadse joined the Selection Committee for the Golden Ark Award. Mrs Kakbadse currently is Chair of the Science and Technology Advisory Panel of the Global Environmental Facility - GEF - and Board Member of the Ford Foundation. She used to be, amongst others, President of IUCN, Minister of Environment in Ecuador, and founder of Fundacion Natura in Ecuador.

Call for candidates

A call for candidates for the Golden Ark Award 2008 will be launched in May 31th 2007. The deadline for applications is September 30th 2007. The first Golden Ark Award Conference will take place 13 and 14 March 2008 at Burgers' Zoo, Arnhem, the Netherlands.
